NMSU regents: Garrey Carruthers will have no input in selecting new chancellor

The chairwoman of New Mexico State’s Board of Regents confirmed Chancellor Garrey Carruthers will not be involved in the process to select his replacement.

However, Carruthers can meet with the candidates and relay his vision for the future of the university.

“It’s highly appropriate for the chancellor to be involved in the transitioning of guards,” said Kari Mitchell, a member of the board of regents.

“There’s definitely roles and responsibilities for the chancellor in the transition,” said Debra Hicks, chairwoman of the board.

The public will have several opportunities to meet with the chancellor candidates throughout the week at 3:15 p.m. in Corbett Auditorium #247.

“It’s not intended to be awkward,” Hicks said. “It’s not going to be awkward. Some people can make it awkward, absolutely. But he’s comfortable.”
