UPDATE: Man arrested in Las Cruces shooting that injured two

UPDATE: Las Cruces Police say they have arrested the suspect in this case.

Las Cruces Police arrested Lorenzo Sarabia , 22, on two counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of tampering with evidence. He is being held at the Doña Ana Coutny Detention Center.

The shooting happened around 7:45 a.m. Saturday, June 2 near Sixth Street and West Picacho Avenue.

Las Cruces police officers were dispatched to the report of a shooting near west Picacho Avenue and Sixth Street. Officers found an 18-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man both suffering from gunshot wounds. The woman had injuries in both arms while the man had been shot in the face. Both were transported to University Medical Center in El Paso, the man in critical condition and the woman with serious injuries.

Police reported investigators believe the 18-year-old woman had been celebrating her graduation at Sarabia’s home in an afterparty. Police wrote the 18-year-old woman and her 22-year-old friend left Sarabia’s apartment around 7 a.m. when Sarabia followed them to a different home, accusing them of stealing a large amount Xanax from his apartment. Police report a witness saw Sarabia armed with a handgun.

Police say Sarabia had the two victims get into his car and rive them around before they eventually exited the vehicle near Sixth Street and West Picacho Avenue.. Investigators believe Sarabia parked the vehicle, got out, walked toward the victims, and began shooting.

Police believe the shooting occurred in the parking lot of a nearby business.

Police report Sarabia fled the area and threw away his weapon.

Police said investigators found a Smith & Wesson .38 caliber handgun in a trash bin on the 600 block of McClure Road before locating Sarabia at his apartment.

Sarabia was taken into custody.

The two victims remain in the hospital.

Sarabia is being held without bond.
