West Side home terrorized by bees

El Paso is getting into the months were the weather is getting nice and many of us go outside but the warm weather also means bees are going to be more active.

“We got an infestation of those Africanized bees,” said west side resident Joe Duran.

Duran said for two weeks the bees have been terrorizing him and his family at his West Side home.

“I got attacked and I got over 100 bee stings on me,” Duran said.

Friday’s high was 96 degrees and Duran was wearing a heavy jacket with a hood. His wife scrambled to get into her truck.

“They are kind of aggressive and that’s why we haven’t gotten out of the house. I got out earlier this morning and I got stung by one,” Duran said.

You might think ‘Why hasn’t he just called the fire department?’

“I’ve been trying and trying. I’ve called 911. I tried to get the fire station or somebody to come and spray them down with foam and they just left a few minutes ago and they said there’s nothing they can do about it,” Duran said.

Duran also thought maybe some beekeepers would know what to do.

“The beekeepers came out on Tuesday and they were going to take them but they saw what it was all about and they said, “I’m sorry these things are too aggressive and we can’t do anything for you’ so they left,” Duran said.

So what can you do to keep bees away? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has some tips:

Wear light-colored, smooth-finished clothing.

Avoid perfumed soaps, shampoos, and deodorants and don’t wear cologne or perfume.

The CDC says sweat irritates bees and bees love bananas and the smell of them.
