State leaders and immigrant advocates plan “March to Tornillo”

State leaders are speaking out against the Trump administration’s “Zero-Tolerance” policy on immigration — a policy they say is the cause for undocumented immigrant children being separated from their families.

Now a march is being organized to advocate for immigrant rights.

The Department of Health and Human Services has said it is planning to house about 360 undocumented children at a tent city at the Tornillo port of entry.

Late Friday, Republican State Representative Will Hurd toured the tent facilities.

Hurd said that the conditions for detainees at the shelter were good and that the facility is run by emergency management professionals.

Hurd added that the 16- to 17-year-old boys staying there are fed three square meals a day along with snacks and that legal representatives and case workers are on the premises.

Hurd still opposes the Trump administrations policies saying, “If we have to separate kids from their parents, then we probably need to rethink our strategy on how we’re securing our country.”

“The question that I’ve had for HHS is how do the parents that are separated from their kids know where their kids are? How do the kids know where their parents are? How long is this policy going to last and is it having the intended effect that the administration wanted to have?” Hurd asked.

Congressman Beto O’Rouke will be leading a march Sunday morning.

Organizers said the march is to protest the separation of immigrant families.

Organizers are planning to meet at the Tornillo-Guadalupe Toll Plaza on M.F. Aguilera Road from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Organizers said that location is less that a mile from the Tornillo port of entry and those planning to attend to bringing plenty of water and sunscreen.
