Another holiday, another Interstate 10 closure
Another weekend, another holiday and another closure of Interstate 10.
“As far as the eye can see, it’s just traffic,” said Tyrone Green, who drove from Las Cruces to El Paso to play Topgolf with his children for Father’s Day.
This time, the westbound lanes of Interstate 10 are closed at Sunland Park so crews can build the new Sunland Park Drive center overpass, install underpass lighting and paint bridge columns, according to TXDOT.
“There wasn’t even any signs or anything like that,” Green said. “Not even a detour sign where we came out of.”
Normally, drivers can use Mesa Street as a way to avoid the closed stretch of the highway. However, with Sunday’s closure, the Mesa entrance to the highway is also closed.
“There was nothing posted saying (on) Sunday or Father’s Day, it would be difficult to get back home,” Green said.
Sunday’s closure comes after three consecutive weekends of closures in the same stretch of highway this spring. One weekend was during UTEP’s graduation weekend.
For a list of upcoming scheduled closures through July, TXDOT has updated information posted on their website.
