Las Cruces man allegedly involved in shooting charged with attempted murder

Isaiah R. O’Kelley, 21, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder after his suspected involvement in an alleged shooting off Hoagland Road in Las Cruces last Friday. He is also charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Las Cruces Police responded to a report of shots fired on Friday, June 15th, just after 11 PM near Windsor Place and Hoagland Road. Police found multiple shell casings and gunfire damage to a vehicle at the scene. A resident hiding behind a pickup truck received a minor injury to his shin.

An investigation found that a neighbor confronted a resident hosting a loud party. O’Kelley was identified as one of the people attending the party. He allegedly brandished a handgun and pointed it at the neighbor while arguing with him.

Police say the neighbor used his phone to call 911 and take photos of O’Kelley. O’Kelley continued to threaten the victim as he got into a vehicle according to police.

The neighbor said he threw landscaping blocks toward O’Kelley’s vehicle, then O’Kelley allegedly fired multiple shots at him while fleeing in his vehicle. The neighbor took cover behind a nearby pickup truck as the alleged shots were fired.

Investigators say they found 12 shell casings at the scene as well as bullet strikes to the pickup truck and an exterior wall of a house on Briarwood Lane. Investigators were able to identify O’Kelley as the suspect through the pictures taken on the neighbor’s phone.

Las Cruces police arrested O’Kelley on Monday, June 18. He has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center.
