El Paso receives 2018 All-America City award

Sunday evening, El Paso was announced as one of the recipients for the National Civic League’s All-America City award. El Paso was one of 20 cities competing for the award. El Paso has previously won the award in 1969 and 2010.

On the All-America City twitter page, El Paso was called a city of champions.

A delegation representing El Paso, which included Featherweight World Champion Jennifer Han and City Councilwoman Cassandra Hernandez, traveled to the awards ceremony, which took place in Denver, Colorado. The delegation presented a project that showcased the Sun City.

The award recognizes a city’s efforts to tackle the most pressing local issues, such as education opportunities, civic empowerment and housing assistance.

Aileen Martinez, a 14 year-old El Paso native, also won the All-America City Youth Leadership award. Only two of these are given out a year. She is also a resident of an Housing Authority of the City of El Paso property, one of the projects that helped El Paso win the title.

The finalists were chosen based on three projects that address the community’s most pressing challenges.

The city of El Paso submitted projects that included empowering El Pasoans for services and leadership, career and educational opportunities and public housing opportunities.
