TxDOT to conduct community meetings for Alameda Corridor study

The Texas Department of Transportation is conducting a study that will determine what Alameda Avenue will look like the next 20 years, and it wants residents to share their opinions.

The Alameda Corridor study will take eighteen months to complete at will look at the more than 30-mile entire stretch of Alameda from Texas Ave. to the Fabens and Tornillo areas.

“We are in the process of collecting data and in the initial phase of this plan,” said Thelma Ramirez, transportation planner for TxDOT.

The study will help identify the transportation needs and help determine short and long-term plans for Alameda Ave.

TxDOT will also focus on intersections along Alameda that see a high number of crashes, like Yarbrough and Alameda.

Ramirez said the study will look into solutions to reduce the number of crashes.

There are two public community meetings where residents will be able to share their opinions.

“We need the community’s vision. So, as you come into the public meeting you will see 35 miles worth of plots for you to view and comment on. We need those comments,” Ramirez said.

Residents will be allowed to vote on topics, including safety, transit, aesthetics and pedestrian/bike trails. There will also be an opportunity for residents to give their own suggestions.

The first meeting will be Tuesday, June 26, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Clint High School.

The second meeting is Wednesday, June 27, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Riverside High School.

If a resident can not attend the meetings, they can provide feedback online, www.txdot.gov.
