LCPD: Texas woman drove drunk with children in vehicle

Police in Las Cruces charged an Odessa, Texas woman with child abuse after the woman allegedly drove drunk while her two children were in the vehicle.

Rosalia Rodriguez, 35, is charged with two third-degree felony counts of child abuse and a misdemeanor count of driving while intoxicated. Police said she was also driving without insurance and without a valid driver’s license.

Police learned Rodriguez left a local residence and was possibly driving drunk in a white Jeep Cherokee at about 3:30 a.m. on July 11, 2018.

A short while later, a Las Cruces Police officer spotted a vehicle matching the description traveling west on University Avenue. “The officer conducted a traffic stop and, upon approaching the vehicle, detected an odor of alcoholic beverage emitting from the driver’s breath,” police said in a news release.

The driver, identified as Rodriguez, allegedly had her 12-year-old son in the vehicle along with her ex-boyfriend’s 16-year-old son.

The officer administered standardized field sobriety tests on Rodriguez and determined she was intoxicated, police said. “A breath test subsequently confirmed her level of intoxication,” police said.

Rodriguez was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where she is initially being held without bond.
