Police arrest man suspected of assaulting elderly car wash employee

Police arrested a suspect accused of assaulting and robbing an elderly man in South El Paso.

Department officials credited the tips they received through Crime Stoppers of El Paso for the arrest of 55-year-old Jorge Mejia.

At 11:15 p.m. on July 12, 2018, officers responded to a call regarding someone suspicious near the streets of Delta and Tangier. When officers arrived at the location, they identified Mejia as the person involved in the June 21st robbery of the 75-year-old man.

Police said the victim was beginning his work day at the car wash on the 6900 block of Delta. The man noticed Mejia asleep in one of the car wash bays and woke him, police said.

At that point, Mejia attacked the man and took his cell phone, police said. The attack was caught on surveillance footage.

Police said they took Mejia into custody and booked him into the El Paso County Detention Facility. Mejia is being charged with aggravated robbery, a 1st degree felony, and being held under a $50,000 bond.
