Rabid bat discovered in Doa Ana County

A case of rabies is prompting officials in Doña Ana County to warn residents to keep their families and pets safe from wild animals.

The disease was diagnosed this week in a bat that was killed by a cat living at what is being described as a “rural residence” in the county.

Rabies can be transmitted to people and house pets, and can be fatal if not treated quickly and aggressively.

Officials said the woman’s cat is current on its vaccinations, so it is currently being quarantined and monitored at home, where it will remain for 45 days. The animal’s condition will also be relayed to Animal Control.

Residents are urged to keep their pets regularly vaccinated, and avoid bats – living or dead.

Contact Animal Control if a pet is playing with a bat or a bat’s carcass.

Also, officials are asking residents to warn children against touching bats.

Anyone who has made contact with a bat should seek immediate medical attention.
