EPPD proposes new headquarter building to El Paso City Council
It’s been 30 years since the El Paso Police Department moved into their current headquarters, which was once a Sears department store.
El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen reported to El Paso City Council that the police department is in need of a new headquarters building on Tuesday.
Chief Allen said the efficiency of the building is costing the city money in repairs.
“The question needs to be asked how far do we let it go before it gets out of control,” he said.
The parking lot at the department’s headquarters has also had it’s fair share of problems.
Over the years, vehicles including a fire truck have fallen through the parking lot, including a fire truck.
The parking lot of the police headquarters has been seen so unsafe that crews have blocked off the are where the fire truck fell through to prevent any other mishaps.
El Paso Police have also been pushing for an East Side Command Center.
City council Representative Dr. Michiel Noe suggested combining that with the headquarters.
“That’s been on the table for many years, again the problem is money. Where is it going to come from,” Chief Allen said.
The discussion for price and location have not been addressed yet.
Only the idea of a new police headquarters as addressed at City Council.
This is the first step before both City Council and police can go any further.
