El Paso Police, Texas DPS taking applications for a joint ‘Citizens Academy’

The El Paso Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety are now taking applications for the joint Citizen’s Academy program.

The 11-week program begins Sept. 25, 2018.

The academy will provide students with a hands-on education.

It will introduce students to multiple programs and services provided by law enforcement as well as how law enforcement functions on a daily basis.

It is also designed to teach students about the many safety challenges that Texans face.

14 classes will be held weekly on Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. as well as three additional Saturday morning classes.

This year’s academy will include topics like patrol procedures, SWAT, K-9 units, crash and criminal investigations and more.

EPPD and the Texas DPS have also announced that the BorderRAC (Regional Advisory Council) will be apart of the academy.

BorderRAC will provide a “Stop the Bleed” class.

A presentation on the Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events or CRASE program will also be given.

No more than 30 students over the age of 18 will be selected.

Each student must commit to at least 11 out of the 14 classes provided to graduate.

Application are available on the El Paso Police Department’s website, at any EPPD Regional Command and at the DPS Office located at 11612 Scott Simpson.

Completed applications can be returned to any regional command, the Texas DPS Office or scanned and emailed to 1687@elpasotexas.gov.
