USL team named El Paso Locomotive FC
El Paso’s new United Soccer League team will be named the El Paso Locomotive FC.
The team hosted a news conference to announce their name Thursday at the EPIC Railyard Event Center.
The fact that the announcement was made at the Railyard Event Center should have been a big hint that the team’s name was going to be the Locomotive.
The name was one of five names that fans had an opportunity to vote for, but ultimately the name was selected by MountainStar sports group, the ownership group of the Locomotive.
The other four names were the Lagartos, the Estrellas, the Stars and the Tejanos.
Alan Ledford is the President of MountainStart Sports group.
Ledford says the name Locomotive fits the Sun City Perfectly.
“If you look at the crest there are a number of elements that reflect directly on El Paso,” Ledford said. “We think it represents the 915 very well.”
Locomotive General Manager, Andrew Forrest agreed. He said the Locomotive was his favorite name.
“I think when we started digging in the history on all the different names I think it was important to recoginize Locomotive as being part of the progress that helped build El Paso into the thriving city that is it today,” Forrest said.
The Locomotive will start play in the United Soccer League March 9th of 2019.
The team’s first two seasons will be played at Southwest University Park.
The USL is a Division II professional soccer league that’s been in existence since 2011.
