Postal workers protest Trump’s order regarding privatization of USPS

Some members of the U.S. Postal service are protesting President Donald Trump’s executive order that created a task force that’s looking into issues with the postal service.

One of the things the task force is looking into is the possibility of privatizing the U.S. Postal Service, something that many local postal workers disagree with.

According to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) who introduced the proposal in the ‘Delivery Government Solutions in the 21st Century’, the proposal would “restructure the United States Postal System to return it to a sustainable business model or prepare it for future conversion from a Government agency into a privately-held corporation. Like many European nations, the United States could privatize its postal operator while maintaining strong regulatory oversight to ensure fair competition and reasonable prices for customers.”

One of the goals for the President’s executive order is said to be to revitalize the USPS that is experiencing “faster than expected declines” in revenue from First Class Mail and Marketing Mail.

One month after the proposal was introduced, a bipartisan resolution was introduced opposing the privatization proposal. H.Res. 993 states that “Congress should take all appropriate measures to ensure that the United States Postal Service remains an independent establishment of the Federal Government and is not subject to privatization.”

Postal service workers across the county including from Puerto Rico and Hawaii are protesting today.

A protest also took place at Cleveland Square Park in El Paso. Another protest happened in Las Cruces.
