Forecasters: ‘Taste of winter weather’ on tap for New Mexico

Forecasters say a change in New Mexico’s weather pattern Sunday and Monday may produce “significant travel impacts” along Interstates 25 and 40 and in other areas.

The National Weather Service says heavy snow is forecast Sunday and Monday across parts of northern and central New Mexico with the eastern plains getting much colder temperatures beginning Sunday and spreading across central New Mexico into Monday.

Forecasters say the combination of a strong cold front and a disturbance dropping southward from the northern Rockies and the Great Basin adds up to “the first taste of winter weather for much of central and northern New Mexico.

Temperatures behind the front will be well below normal and unusually cold for mid-October, and Sunday’s highs may not get much above freezing across the northeast plains.
