Man accidentally shot self while hunting; airlifted to El Paso

An man reportedly hunting in the desert west of Las Cruces called 911 Thursday afternoon and said he had “accidentally shot” himself.

Dispatchers said the 75-year-old man called at about 12:33 p.m. and said he was near the railroad tracks near the intersection of County Road B4 and County Road B5.

Doña Ana County Sheriff’s deputies were sent to locate the man, along with assistance from Border Patrol agents and New Mexico State Police.

The man was found next to his truck with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported via helicopter to a trauma center in El Paso.
