Eastwood wins Sweet Play of the Week on scoop and score

The Eastwood Troopers have done a lot of winning lately, and they did even more Wednesday.

The Troopers won Sweet Play of the Week honors thanks to a scoop and score from their win Friday night over Bel Air.

Jacob Gonzalez and Xavier Avila combined for the memorable defensive touchdown.

After a bad snap by Bel Air, Gonzalez stormed in and made things even worse for the Highlanders, poking the ball away from the quarterback. The ball then took a favorable bounce for Eastwood, landing near the end zone. Avila then swooped in for the scoop and score, nearly falling over on the recovery, but HE somehow managed to maintain his balance on his way for a touchdown.

“I scooped it up, and when I scooped it, my face was [close to] the ground, and I was about to fall. And I got my balance back and took like three steps, then I was in the end zone,” said Avila.

Though Avila got credit for the touchdown, it was the pressure of Gonzalez that kick-started the whole play.

“He snapped it, he dropped it, I spin him around, the ball went flying,” said Gonzalez. “Then my guy ‘X’, scoops and scores.”

Eastwood is a perfect 4-0 in district play so far and has clinched at least a share of the 1-5A, Div. I title.

The Troopers wrap up the regular season with a game against El Dorado on Friday.

After a 1-3 start, the Troopers have run off five straight wins to move their overall record to 6-3, although they insist they’ve been playing solid football from the beginning.

“I feel like it’s not us as a team that has improved. I feel like you guys just started noticing us,” said Avila when asked about the team’s turnaround. “I think we’ve been this good since week one. You know, we’ve really been a powerhouse in this city for a while now. And you guys are finally looking at us the right way – just the city is.”
