El Paso group stands in solidarity with migrant caravans
As hundreds of migrants rushed the border in Tijuana, more than two dozen El Paso residents held a rally on Sunday afternoon in solidarity with the caravans headed toward the United States.
“I want to raise my daughter in a perfect world where everybody’s treated equal,” said Jose Placencia, an El Paso resident who brought his one-year-old daughter, Mila, to the rally. “Where there’s no such thing as walls, borders, nationalities.”
The rally was organized by the Party of Socialism and Liberation in El Paso.
On Sunday morning via Twitter, President Donald Trump strongly encouraged Mexico to prevent the migrant caravans from entering the United States.
“Would be very SMART if Mexico would stop the Caravans long before they get to our Southern Border, or if originating countries would not let them form,” Trump tweeted.
Close to 500 migrants rushed the Tijuana border on Sunday, breaking through the barricades of Mexican federal police. Customs and Border Protection officials closed the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
“When refugees are under attack, what do we do?” asked an organizer of the rally.
The group responded: “Stand up, fight back.”
Protesters held signs that read: “United States imperialism caused (the) crisis in Honduras.”
“Everyone deserves support when they need it most,” said Cheyenne Lozano, an El Paso resident. “Our country has caused so many troubles for these people. The least we can do is, the least we can offer is support when they need it most.”
