UPDATE: Police arrest hit-and-run suspect for allegedly driving drunk during crash

El Paso Police have arrested a man who is suspected of driving drunk when he allegedly hit a vehicle on the side of the road Friday night.

Jesus Ponce, 31, has been charged with Intoxicated Assault, after police say he fled the scene after the crash.

Police say a 2002 Jeep Wrangler broke down on the southbound lanes of Yarbrough and the driver, 51-year-old Jose Vasquez stepped outside and turned on the emergency lights.

Ponce was allegedly driving a Nissan Armada when he he allegedly hit Vasquez. Police say Ponce ran from the scene and returned to tell officers at the scene that he was a passenger in the Jeep.

Several witnessed said Ponce was the only occupant in the Nissan during the crash.

Vasquez suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

Ponce was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on a $50,000 bond.
