COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS: Eastlake High soccer teams to play in Barcelona tournament
The Eastlake High School soccer teams are headed to Barcelona, Spain to compete in an international soccer tournament. The teams will leave Thursday, December 27.
“All of us are really excited to get this opportunity,” Lindsey Martinez, a defender on the girls team, said. “[W]e are the only ones in the state, I believe.”
This isn’t the first time they have gone, either.
“This is going to be our second year,” Gilbert Martinez, principal of Eastlake High School, said. ” We do it every three years.”
Both the girls and boys teams will play four games in the tournament. And they can’t wait to put their best foot forward and make their school and city proud.
“First it’s going to be scary,” Gibby Widner, defender for the boys team, said. “But in the end, I feel like their going to pull through and their going to have an amazing time.”
“Whoever we play, we are going to go out there and give our best,” Lindsey Martinez said. “We’re there to compete and learn more.”
And if the last time the teams were there is any indication, they are looking at greatness.
“We did really good, actually,” Widner said. “I think we only lost one game…out of four.”
