TXDOT warns about icy conditions and gives tips on how to stay safe

Cold and blowing snow is sweeping through The Borderland.

This means that driving conditions could be very dangerous if you’re out on the roads.

TXDot crews getting prepared earlier this afternoon for the snowfall, in their second wave of road treatments. this one a mixture of sand and salt that will be poured out on the roadways.

Jennifer Wright, a spokeswoman with TXdot said the mixture “will help melt the ice or keep traction on roadways that have snow on them.”

Their trucks have already been treating the bridges and high altitude roadways, like Transmountain, with a salt solution, which is a liquid treatment

Wright told ABC 7 that “the salt solution, lowers the freezing temperature, so the salt solution on the roadway, prevents the road from icing.”

TXDot also scheduled crews to work 12-hour shifts, so there is 24 hour patrolling of roadways but warns that the roads can still be slippery, with ice forming on bridges and overpasses.

Wright said, “so people should always proceed with caution, people should not drive in inclement weather, unless they absolutely have to, we should be mindful of that of all times, it’s dangerous.”

Wright said that if you have to be out in the overnight hours, or even into tomorrow morning, there are some tips to remember

Slow down! Make sure you’re driving at a safe speed. Pay attention, make sure you are focusing on the road and nothing else. Keep a greater distance between you and the car ahead of you.

Also, respect the work trucks, don’t get in between a plow and the tx dot car following them.
