Animal Services housing dogs in temporary shelter to protect them from cold weather

El Paso Animal Services is housing dozens of dogs in a temporary shelter at a park in the northeast because of freezing overnight temperatures.

The shelter is at Sunrise Park on the 3800 block of Sunrise Avenue.

The dogs, typically housed in outdoor kennels, were moved several days ago. Dipping temperatures forced officials to take them indoors to keep them safe.

Animal Services said it housing a large animal population and continues to deal with a longer-than-usual peak season.

The city also needs the help from the public to continue its goal of becoming a “no-kill” shelter.

Paul Powell, executive director, is encouraging residents to adopt, volunteer or donate.

Items that are needed include stainless steel bowls, wire crates, towels, blankets and dog treats.

The animals in the temporary shelter will be up for adoption on Saturday at Sunrise Park from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
