UTEP guard Nigel Hawkins named C-USA Freshman of the Week

UTEP guard Nigel Hawkins received C-USA Freshman of the Week honors Monday afternoon after scoring 24 points in a win over Rice this past Saturday.

The freshman guard also tallied 11 points to go along with three assists and three rebounds in a close loss against North Texas on Thursday.

Hawkins has now scored in double-digits in five of the last six games. And the only time in that span he was held to single-digits, he scored nine points.

Hawkins is averaging about 12 points and five rebounds per game for the Miners so far this season, and he has started in all 13 games in which he has appeared.

Hawkins is the third UTEP freshman to be recognized already this season.

Forward Efe Odigie has been named the conference’s freshman of the week twice already, while guard Jordan Lathon has also received the distinction.

It’s the first time in program history that three Miners have all received that honor in the same season.

UTEP is currently 6-9 on the year and 1-3 in Conference USA play with a game at UAB coming up on Thursday.
