Team of nurses visits immigration shelters in El Paso

A team of volunteers was in El Paso over the weekend and on Monday to visit with local immigration shelters.

The team from the Registered Nurses Response Network flew in from California to visit with shelters and see if they are in need of more medical specialists.

Based on what they find, the group will consider future deployments to further assist the shelters.

“Depending on the numbers of what is needed, we are ready to go,” said Secretary of California Nurses Association Catherine Kennedy.

Nurses who have already spent years in the area say medical specialists are needed now more than ever.

“A lot of them have come from poverty driven areas where they have no medical help so we have people who are coming in who haven’t seen a doctor their whole lives,” said registered nurse at the Rescue Mission of El Paso Janie Zermeno.

More and more, El Paso nurses are treating patients who are new to the country and are suffering from illnesses such dehydration and influenza.
