Pregnant woman, unborn child killed in crash

A pregnant woman and her unborn baby were killed in a head-on crash near Santa Teresa.

New Mexico State Police identified the victim as Cynthia P. Gamboa, 24, of Chaparral. The crash happened in the late evening on Jan. 31 on New Mexico State Road 136 near mile post 9.

The investigation by New Mexico State Police found that, for unknown reasons, a 2009 Toyota driven by Gamboa crossed the center line into oncoming traffic and struck a vehicle head-on.

Gamboa, who was approximately 35 weeks pregnant, was airlifted to an El Paso hospital. She and her unborn baby died the following afternoon.

The other driver, only identified as a 20-year-old from El Paso, was taken to an area hospital for treatment. That driver’s condition is unknown.

Alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor to the crash and investigators said seatbelts were not used properly.
