Escobar on apparent vulgar expression: ‘I was in disbelief at blatant lies’
El Paso Congresswoman Veronica Escobar told ABC-7 she was in disbelief during President Donald Trump’s State of the Union Address, but stopped short of addressing what some perceived as a vulgar vocal expression seen on national television.
About eight minutes into his speech, the President was talking about the two political parties coming together.
The broadcast then shows a wide shot of a group of Democrat women dressed in white, among them Escobar. That’s when she turns to the person next to her, rolls her eyes and appears to mutter a Spanish-language vulgarity that very roughly translates to, “you must be kidding.”
In the moments leading up to Escobar’s expression, Trump was telling the nation:
“Many of us have campaigned on these same core promises to defend American jobs and demand fair trade for American workers, to rebuild and revitalize our nation’s infrastructure, to reduce the price of health care and prescription drugs, to create an immigration system that is safe, modern, lawful and secure and to pursue a foreign policy that puts American interests first. There is a new opportunity in American politics if only we have the courage together to seize it.”
When asked her reaction, Escobar sent the following statement to ABC-7:
“Disbelief. That was my reaction to President Trump’s blatant lies during the State of the Union address,” Escobar told ABC-7. “Disbelief because President Trump used our beloved city of El Paso to promote fear and division instead of focusing on addressing the issues affecting hard-working El Pasoans.”
It would be more than 20 minutes later when the president mentioned El Paso on his speech saying… “The border city of El Paso, Texas used to have extremely high rates of violent crime, one of the highest in the entire country and considered one of the nations most dangerous cities.” Trump further stated the installation of border barriers helped reduce crime in El Paso, now one of the safest cities in the U.S.
That statement was swiftly rejected by Escobar and a large group of elected officials, including El Paso mayor Dee Margo.
