Burges beats Andress in thrilling fashion on Senior Night

A week after surpassing the 3,000-point mark for his career, Burges senior Tristen Newton added another chapter to his legacy.

Newton hit a game-winning floater as time expired to lift the Mustangs to a 52-50 win over Andress Friday night.

The win clinched the District 1-5A title for Burges and moved their district record to 15-0.

Andress ends the regular season with a 14-2 mark in district play and will advance to the postseason. Meanwhile, Burges has one more regular season game left before the playoffs – a date with Jefferson Tuesday night.

The Eagles also lost to Burges at home, 71-61, in a game played back on Jan. 8.

The Mustangs were celebrating Senior Night Friday with Andress looking to play spoiler and keep their hopes alive to at least split the district title.

Newton picked up his third foul early in the second quarter, forcing him to go to the bench. But he rallied when he returned to the action and still found a way to score 30 of his team’s 52 points.

The Mustangs are now 28-4 overall with only one of those losses coming to a local team. Americas remains the only team from El Paso to beat Burges this season after they came away with a 54-51 win on jan. 4.
