New Mexico mother and daughter sentenced in daycare deaths
Court officials say a New Mexico woman who operated a daycare center has received 36 years in prison and her daughter got 30 years in the death of one toddler in their care and the serious injury of another.
The Ninth Judicial District Attorney’s office in Portales says Mary Taylor and her daughter Sandi Taylor were sentenced Monday after a four-day trial. Neither woman testified.
The former owners and operators of the Taylor Tots daycare were convicted last month of reckless child abuse for leaving the children in a hot car for more than two hours in July 2017.
A 22-month-old girl died the same day at a hospital. A 2-year-old girl survived, but is expected to face lifelong physical challenges.
Their attorney has vowed to appeal the verdict.
