NMSU’s Brooke Salas wins WAC Player of the Year again

NMSU guard Brooke Salas was named WAC Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, the league announced Monday.

In addition to repeating as the top player in the conference, Salas was also named the WAC Defensive Player of the Year after finishing second in blocks and steals per game.

Salas averaged more than 19 points and 11 rebounds per game to help guide the Aggies to their fifth consecutive regular season conference title.

During the season she also became NMSU’s all-time leader in blocked shots, despite the fact she is listed as a 5-11 guard.

But as talented as Salas is, she is also humble.

“I think having teammates that can also score the ball has taken a lot of pressure off me,” she said. “And to not worry about me having to score or me having to rebound, and just playing as a team I think has helped me a lot.”

The Aggies will meet Chicago State Wednesday in Las Vegas in the quarterfinals of the WAC Tournament. They are just three games away from a tournament title and booking their trip to the Big Dance.

“I’m a competitor, and we’ve got a lot of competitors on our team. So, we look forward to these games and these tournaments. And we’re excited to compete,” she said.
