Local medical expert issues spring break safety tips

As millions of Americans prepare to let loose for spring break, new tips are being released on how vacationers can keep themselves safe.

Many pitfalls are easy to miss, like the extreme health risks a person takes on when they mix alcohol consumption with hot tubing.

Health experts have cited a jump in drunk driving numbers during spring break when severe traffic accidents go up by about 9 percent.

Also, vacationers are warned to check for life guards and not to go alone into unfamiliar bodies of water.

Furthermore, Spring Breakers are being warned not to overshare or advertise their location, especially when partying in a new city our outside of the U.S.

“Please take additional precautions,” said Carlos Alarcon from the Hospitals of Providence EMS Network. “Keep a close watch on your children and wear life jackets as necessary. The sun is out. It is nice and shiny. It is nice and hot so we encourage people to utilize the adequate skin protection.”

It also helps guarantee a vacations safety to never settle on a first floor hotel room.

Rather, it is advised to have a room that is on the second floor or higher.

“Some margaritas might be coming and going,” said Alarcon. “Remember to limit your alcohol consumption. Use it moderately. Enjoy yourself but make sure that you do not drink and drive. If you need some help, if you need a ride home, use a ride sharing service or get some family members to drive you home.”

And finally, any valuables being left in a hotel room should be secured in a safe or lock box.
