El Paso County Sheriff’s Office sends warning regarding scam fundraisers for fallen deputy
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about scam fundraisers for Deputy Peter Herrera who died on Sunday.
A spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office said the scammers are calling individuals asking for donations to benefit Herrera’s family in the form of gift cards.
The Sheriff’s Office said there are only two legitimate fundraising campaigns. One was organized by Adrian Gonzales on behalf of the Sheriff’s Office. The other was organized by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Officers Association.
The Sheriff’s Office said it does not solicit donations over the phone, and it would never ask the public for gift cards.
Herrera died at 5:35 p.m. Sunday evening. The Sheriff’s Office was not able to confirm a cause of death.
Herrera was shot Friday morning short before 2 a.m. after conducting a traffic stop in San Elizario at the intersection of Chicken Ranch Road and Socorro Road.
