Parents upset after Sunrise Elementary sends letter about new clothing rule

Parents are upset after receiving a letter from Sunrise Elementary in Chaparral about a new clothing rule.

The letter sent to parents reads: “Dear Sunrise parents, Beginning on Thursday, April 25, 2019 Sunrise Elementary is asking parents or guardians to not send students with hoodies coats or other non-weather appropriate clothing. Students have been told they will have their hoodie taken away if they bring them to school. Thank you for your cooperation.”

Ashley Cortinas, whose daughter is a 2nd-grader at Sunrise Elementary, asked the principal for the rationale.

“She said, ‘Yes I’m just afraid of heat exhaustion. I do not want kids collapsing on my field. I see them coming in and they are red cheeks sweaty flsuhed and I’m afraid of heat stroke.'”

ABC-7 reached out to the Gadsden Independent School District, which provided the following statement on the new attire policy:

“The administration at Sunrise Elementary notification to parents regarding sweaters or hoodies does allow students to wear that clothing in the morning hours which normally has chilly temperatures. However, due to the rising afternoon temperatures in April and May, parents were advised that their students put away sweaters or hoodies in their backpack for the afternoon.”

Parents tell ABC-7 they’re asking the school to make a correction to clarify that hoodies and sweaters are allowed at school, especially in the early morning hours.

After the statement was issued to ABC-7 parents say the school needs to make a correction and reissue the memo so all parents can understand sweaters and hoodies are allowed in school.
