6-hour El Paso SWAT standoff ends peacefully; ‘no threat to public’

Police lifted a shelter-in-place alert for residents early Tuesday morning after a roughly six-hour SWAT standoff with a barricaded gunman in an East El Paso neighborhood ended peacefully.

“(The) subject was deemed not to be a danger to himself or others and was left at his residence,” police said in a statement about 12:30 a.m. announcing that the “SWAT call out has ended.”

The standoff first unfolded hours earlier on Monday evening at a home at 12209 Ivory Gate, near Montwood High School. Authorities didn’t indicate exactly what initially triggered their SWAT team response.

An individual police confirmed was the barricaded gunman called ABC-7 shortly after the standoff began and had said he did not intend to allow police to enter his home.

“They’re not welcome in my residence,” said the barricaded caller, who added that he was indeed armed with a weapon.

Police negotiators were in contact with man throughout the night and a police spokesman early Tuesday said it was determined that the man posed “no threat to (the) public” and “no criminal offenses were reported.”

While police confirmed the name of the man to ABC-7, KVIA is not reporting it given that he was not arrested and isn’t facing any charges.

Police also said that the standoff was totally unrelated to a murder that took place earlier Monday in another far East El Paso neighborhood.
