Community Champion: Tristen Licon caps off stellar season with Sul Ross Man of the Year Award

For Tristen Licon it all started with a dream of playing college basketball.

It didn't matter whether it was at a division one program, or at a division three school like Sul Ross State University.

Licon was going to make the most of his opportunity, and he did just that by capping off a stellar senior season by winning a prestigious school award.

The 2016 Americas High School graduate was named the Sul Ross State University Man of Year.

An award giving to students who not only excel in sports, but also in academics.

During his senior season at Sul Ross, Licon put up some big numbers for the Lobos.

He averaged 19 points a game and also reached the 1,000 point mark in his college career.

Licon now ranks 4th as the all-time scorer in Sul Ross State University history.

"Really I had that chip on my shoulder," Licon said. "With it being my last chance to play, I wanted to give it everything I had and go out and do what was best for me and play for the team on the front of my chest."

Licon helped lead the Lobos to their third west division title.

He graduated with a degree in strength and conditioning, and also a degree in history.

Licon still has one more year of eligibility, but with everything going on with Covid-19, he still hasn't decided whether he plans to return next season.

Licon's next goal in life is to get into coaching.

"I want to start my coaching career, and really give back to young athletes the way coaches gave to me when I was growing up," Licon said.

And his advice to other young athletes looking to play at the next level is simple, give it everything you got.

"Really if you set your mind to something and you want to achieve it, you can go out and get it," Licon said.
