Remembering former UTEP sportscaster Byron E. Quimbey

El Paso, TX - The COVID-19 virus has claimed the life of former El Pasoan and retired Army Brigadier General Byron E. Quimbey, perhaps better known locally as “Bud.” 

Quimbey served in World War II, the Korean Conflict, and in Vietnam.

During his military service, Quimbey earned two Silver Stars, a Bronze star, and four purple hearts. 

In civilian life in El Paso, he served as the media spokesman for the old Southern Union Gas Company.

 He also had a side-career sportscasting for UTEP basketball, El Paso Double-A baseball, and even the Chicago Bears.

Quimbey’s wife, Gloria, died in 2012.

He is survived by three biological children, three step-children, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

Bud Quimbey was 92 when he succumbed to the COVID-19 virus on June 3rd at a hospital in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he had been living since 2013.
