El Paso surpasses 4,000 total virus cases; 6 new deaths occur – among them a woman in her 30s

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- More than 4,000 people in El Paso County have contracted Covid-19, and 119 people have now died as a result of the virus.

The El Paso Department of Public health reported 89 new cases and six new deaths Thursday morning, including one of the youngest deaths to date.

Among the six fatalities, El Paso health officials identified two female victims as a woman in her 30s with no underlying health conditions, and woman in her 80s with underlying health conditions.

The four male victims were identified as a man in his 50s, two men in their 70s, and a man in his 80s, all of whom had underlying health conditions.

The number of confirmed cases now stands at 4,088. There have now been 3,023 recoveries which leaves 946 known active cases.

The health department has reported 19 new deaths in the last four days, however it has acknowledged that new deaths sometimes are not reported on the exact day that a patient dies.

“Every time we report a death, it should bring about a sorrow in each of us. My worst fear is that we as a community become numb to danger of this virus,” El Paso's Health Authority Dr. Hector Ocaranza said. “The continuing increase in cases and today’s reported deaths should remind everyone that we need to adhere to the protective measures of limiting your outings, wearing a face covering and washing your hands often with soap and water.”

Hospitalizations increased from 98 to 101, with 55 patients in the ICU, and 25 people on ventilators.
