Lawyer for arrested El Paso city councilman says ‘Morgan is fully cooperating with law enforcement’

In a statement, the legal aid attorney for El Paso city councilman Sam Morgan said Sunday that his client is “fully cooperating with law enforcement” after being arrested this past week for allegedly assaulting his wife.

The lawyer’s statement marks the first public comment on Morgan’s behalf since his arrest on Friday.

“Dr. Morgan wishes the public to know that these accusations will in no way interfere with his duties and responsibilities to his constituents in District 4,” wrote Leonard Morales, who said he is representing the elected official.

According to jail records, Morgan was arrested and booked Friday morning into the downtown jail on one count of assault causing bodily injury/family violence. He later posted bail and was released.

“At this time, due to the ongoing investigation and on advice of legal counsel, Dr. Morgan cannot address the details of these charges,” Morales wrote.
