Airway Blvd. to close overnight for…
An overnight street closure is in effect for a busy roadway near the airport. Airway Boulevard will close between Boeing Drive and Convair Road from 7:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. through July 20.
The closure is needed for the installation of a new art project at the underpass titled ‘El Paso Passage,’ created by Bill FitzGibbons.
The art installation is part of a larger effort to improve safety and aesthetics around the El Paso International Airport.
During the closure, electricians will mount the light fixtures and test the lighting.
Terry Sharpe, airport operations manager said the entire Airport Landscape Improvement Project is expected to cost $7 million. The art installation is estimated to cost about $205,000.
The funding comes from the Airport Enterprise Fund, money that is generated through things airport land rentals, car rental fees and fees from hotels that surround the airport.
Future improvements include ADA compliant sidewalks and shaded walkways.
Sharpe said one of the goals is to improve the safety of travelers looking to walk to nearby hotels.
“We want to promote walkability out here and I think this is going to help us do it. We’re also going to improve crosswalks,” Sharpe said.
Sharpe said the lights will likely “go live” in September.
Detours will be in place for drivers who use that stretch of Airway Blvd.
