MURFREESBORO, Tennessee - The UTEP track and field men’s team opened its 2021 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with 13 points on Friday at Dean Hayes Track Complex.

The Miners are ranked fourth behind UTSA (22), Rice (26) and Charlotte (38).

The UTEP women’s team got off to a slow start with no points.

“Not the start I envisioned for us,” UTEP Head Coach Mika Laaksonen said. “It’s always a bit of a rollercoaster ride in this event. We need to move on.”

In the men’s hammer throw, Karol Koncos finished fourth, gaining five points for the Miners on his final throw. Benjamin Coronado tallied three points on his third toss.

Rodgers Korir and Maxwell Kipkosgei capped the night with a combined five points in the men’s 10,000m run.

Korir finished fifth, scoring four points, while Kipkosgei placed eighth with one point.

“Tomorrow is a big day for everybody, mostly qualifying and setting up Sunday’s finals,” Laaksonen said. “We will get the troops ready!”

Field events resume on Saturday with the women’s discus at noon MT.

The running prelims kick off with the women’s 1,500m at 2:30 p.m. MT. The day concludes with the men’s and women’s 3000m steeplechase, with the women starting at 6 p.m. MT.
