Community Champions: Americas softball team looks for fourth win in state playoffs
EL PASO, Texas - Things are peaking at the right time for the Americas softball team.
For the first time since 2012, the Trail Blazers find themselves in the sweet 16 of the Class 6A tournament.
Americas is coming off a victory against Midland High School in the regional quarterfinals.
It was a hard fought victory for the Blazers.
Americas would win the first game against Midland in the best-of-three series, but then lose game two.
The Blazers would bounce back to win the third game and punch their ticket to the next round.
Next up for Americas, South Grand Prairie High School.
A win in this round would see the Blazers advance to the regional finals.
The Blazers know that they're the underdog, but they wouldn't want it any other way.
Americas head coach, Roxanne Luna credits the heart of the team for all their success this season.
"I mean it's like a dream," Luna said. "It's amazing how much heart these girls have, how much fight they have. That's something that we talk about all the time, keep fighting, and stay humble and stay hungry."
Game one against South Grand Prairie is this Thursday in Lubbock, TX.
For all their accomplishments this season, the Americas Trail Blazers are this week's Community Champions.
Community Champions is sponsored by Albertsons and the El Paso Community Foundation.
