ABC-7 Xtra Sunday – Recall petition effort faces legal challenges

KVIA

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- A petition effort is underway to remove a member of El Paso's city council.

It follows in the aftermath of recent votes on city policy on data centers.

Back in June, a marathon twelve-plus hour city council meeting resulted in a 5-3 vote in opposition to an item to renegotiate and possibly cancelling tax incentives for the meta a-i data center under construction in northeast El Paso.

District 4 City rep. Cynthia Boyar Trejo was one of those 5 votes to stop the effort. The meeting ended with chants of 'vote them out' by members of the public still present in response.

As the sentiment turns into potential political consequences, the petition now faces legal hurdles.

But organizers are filing their own action.

So what are the issues at stake - and what will happen next?

Join host Andrew J. Polk as he talks with the organizers and legal representation for the recall petition, and former city elected officials for their perspective.

Tune in Sunday night at 10:35 p.m., right after ABC-7 at 10.
