Screwworm detected in Pecos, Texas, total confirmed cases in U.S. rises to 39

UPDATE (July 18, 2026) -- As of Saturday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture says the total confirmed New World (NWS) screwworm cases in the United States has increased to 39.

According to the department, there are 12 active cases in Texas with the most recent cases being detected in Pecos County, Texas.

Pecos is located 209 miles to the east of El Paso, the cases of NWS was detected in sheep and the USDA confirmed the cases as of July 14.

Two other cases were confirmed by the USDA July 13 in Sutton and Brewster County, Texas. The case in Brewster County infested cattle, while in Sutton county a dog was infested.

Out of the total 39 confirmed cases, 27 are inactive. The USDA determines a case as inactive when the animal recovered or measures have been taken to prevent spreading NWS.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- As of Sunday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said the total reported New World (NWS) screwworm cases increased to 27.

According to the USDA NWS detection map, the agency has confirmed twelve cases in Texas since June 23. The most recent case, confirmed Saturday, came from cattle in Crocket County, Texas, which is about two hours southeast of Fort Stockton.

Since the first confirmed detection in June 3, the USDA confirmed 27 total animal cases. According to the department's website, the USDA says 6 of those are inactive.

The USDA determines a case as inactive when the animal recovered or measures have been taken to prevent spreading NWS.
