Sunday Funday Moment: Las Cruces boys continue annual coat drive for families in need

LAS CRUCES, NM-- Last year we met two Las Cruces boys who decided to use their free time during the pandemic to collect coats for those in need this winter. Well, one year later those two boys, Jaxx and Alex, are at it again spreading warmth this winter season.

"We wanted to help our community and help some of the people that are not fortunate to have some of the stuff we have,” said Alex Trujillo.

This past Wednesday, Jaxx and Alex spent their morning handing out brand new winter coats to families at the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department.

Last year, the boys were able to collect 188 coats. This year the boys didn’t reach their goal of 200 coats, but they were still able to donate over 100 winter coats to families in need.

"This year we got 133. We did get more donations but the prices for jackets went up this year so we weren't able to get enough," said Jaxx.

The boys hope to reach their goal of 200 winter coat donations next year and they plan on continuing this coat drive for years to come. This coat drive is something that makes both the boys mom’s proud.

“It feels really good," said Jessica Dunn, Alex's Mom, "We’re proud of them. They wanted to pursue their goal of exceeding what they bought last year which they weren't able to do but we are still happy with the outcome and thankful for everyone who donated.”

The boys are already planning their coat drive for next year. If you’d like to help them get an early start on donations you can send an email to: jazzitup35@hotmail.com
