El Paso, Texas-- High school students from all across the El Paso Independent School District spent their summer putting together a broadway production that will have you bending and snapping!
“This is a huge opportunity for all our kids to remind our community of how wonderful fine arts is,” said Phillip Barraza, Director of Fine Arts for EPISD.
This year’s EPISD summer musical production will be the 37th annual for the district and the musical of choice is one that people of all ages are familiar with, Legally Blonde.
Camila McCord Vazquez is a senior at Coronado high school and plays the lead role of Elle Woods.
"Having this show where I get to be a powerful woman in law is just an escape to get away from that world,” said Vazquez.
This is the first time she has been a part of the EPISD summer musical production and it’s also a first for her co-star, Samuel Gutierrez.
“It’s both exhausting and exciting. The work is demanding because we strive for excellence,” said Gutierrez.
In just five short week, students were able to put together an amazing broadway production that included memorizing lines, costume development and set building, but it wasn’t just the students who spent their summer prepping for this big day.
“We also have a group of amazing fine arts teachers that are putting this together,” said Barraza.
The cast rehearsed for four hours a day and those hours inside the theater were a way for some students to escape from the real world and bond with their fellow classmates.
“With all the negativity thats going around its very relaxing to have people that you love around you and work with you and it really teaches you the value of teamwork,” said Gutierrez.
Opening night is Wednesday, July 13th at Bowie high school. Admission is free and the show is open to the public.
