Good Vibes Only: Mean Girls musical returns to El Paso
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA)—The Plastics are returning to El Paso for two unforgettable performances this September. Young Borderland performers with Kids-N-Co. Performing Arts and Education Center are taking the stage to present Mean Girls: High School Version.
Auditions for the popular musical took place in July, and the cast and crew have been preparing for six weeks now.
The musical is an adaptation of the hit 2004 teen film. Mean Girls revolves around friendship and popularity while incorporating comedy, music and choreography!
Franklin High School sophomore Alex Garcia has transformed into Regina George. She said this role is a dream come true!
"It is so insane. Like, I've, I have loved this movie ever since I was little, and she's it. So, there's no words. It's amazing. It's like it's amazing,” she said.
Director Raul Chavez encourages audiences to check out the show! He said this is unlike any performance audiences have seen before.
"I told my cast that these characters, even though we know them and we love them, these characters are theirs. And to bring something from them to the character, like make it yours. And I think the cast has done an amazing job in doing so. When you come and see the show, you're not going to see the Regina George from the movie. You're going to see this Regina George," Chavez added.
The adaptation also navigates peer pressure, finding your own voice, and navigating belonging. Officials said it was especially rewarding to see the cast and crew bring the musical to life.
“We worked very hard on this, and it really shows. I think it really shows in my work. And everyone else is here, our directors, our choreographer, everything,” said one performer.
“It's filled with passion and talent and people from all over El Paso who really care about the art of theater.”
