Americas HS Players Save Driver Trapped In Vehicle

EL PASO, TX. – AlateFridaynightcar wreck ends with with a group of high schoolfootball players coming to the rescue.

Sheriff’s investigatorstell ABC-7a man, who was likely drunk, misjudged a turn on Eastlake near Rojas and rolled his vehicleinto a construction hole 40 feet deep.

Americas High School football players were coming home from the game Friday night whenthe accident happenedat a water pipe construction hole. Deptuties say the teens happened to see it all and lept into action.

“We called the cops, but we couldn’t wait that long. He needed help, he was calling for help,” said one of the teen rescuers.”It was like risking our lives, butit was worth it,” said Manny Morelos, another teen.

The alleged drunk driver was stuck inside his car with head injuries. So the teens called for help, grabbed a ladder, went down inside the hole, and helped administer first aid.

“We tried to open the door to see how we could help him. WhenI opened the door, his legs were upward on the driver’s seat and his arm was outside the window,” said Daniel Olivas.

“I was really nervous because once we got out of the car, it really smelled like gasoline. I thought something bad could happen, like the car could explode or we could die,” Morelos said.

The Sheriff’s office called in a helicopter to rush the man to R.E. Thomason Hospital wherehe remained Saturday night with unknown injuries.
