El Paso Gay Pride Kicks Off

EL PASO, Texas – Organizerstold ABC-7,El Paso’s gay community has good reason to celebrate. This year’s pride celebration will stretch over four days; making it the biggest gay event the Sun City has ever seen. Thursday night kicked things off with an outdoor dinner and dance at the El Paso Museum of Art Plaza. Half of the night’s proceeds went to the museum’s education and exhibition programs.

While Gay Pride usually pushes for equality and fighting discrimination, this year has a focus on November’s presidential election. With gay marriage at the forefront of a national debate, El Paso organizers say now is the time to unite the gay, lesbian and transgendered community to make an impact come this fall.

“We actually have individuals who are not here this weekend because they are in Austin for the [Texas] Democratic Convention,” said Pifas Silva with El Paso Sun City Pride.

There is also an effort underway to establish a new El Paso chapter of the Stonewall Democrats, a gay political advocacy group.
