Grandmother’s Body Switched At Ill. Funeral Home

STICKNEY, Ill. (AP) – Grieving relatives who arrived at an Illinois funeral home to view the body of 91-year-old Lillian Grogan found another woman’s body in the casket.

That other body had on Grogan’s dress and favorite bracelet.

Relatives say the Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Stickney had incorrectly tagged the bodies of Grogan and another woman.

The Grogan family discovered the mistake Monday.

The family eventually learned their grandmother had been mistakenly buried, and have now obtained a court order to have her body exhumed and reburied.

The other woman’s identity wasn’t available. The funeral home referred questions to its parent company, Houston-based Service Corporation International.

Company spokeswoman Jennifer Brandino said the families had requested the company not disclose information about the mix-up.
