Strong Wind Advisory In Effect For El Paso, Dona Ana, Huspedth Counties

EL PASO — A wind storm is currently making its way through west Texas and southwestern New Mexico.

Astrong wind advisory is in effect for the cities of Silver City, Truth or Consequences, Alamogordo, Mescalero, Cloudcroft, Timberon, Lordsburg, Deming, El Paso County, Sierra Blanca, and Dell City.

Thestorm will continue to hit western Texas and southern New Mexico this morning through mid-afternoon as a strong low pressure system moves across the region.

Wind gusts of upto 91 mph have already occurred at Aguirre Springs near Las Cruces with isolated gusts measured to almost 80 mph over east El Paso.

The high winds have reportedly blown roofs off of some buildings over east El Paso around Alabama street with a pole barn blown down near Las Cruces. The roof has also been blown off of a police station at White Sands Missile Range.

In addition, blowing dust is reducing visibilities to under a quarter mile over some areas including along portions of Interstate 10 between El Paso and Las Cruces and from Las cruces to Deming.

Interstate 10 has been closed near Deming due to the windy conditions and blowing dust.

The powerful winds will continue into the early afternoon. West to southwest winds will gust to around 60 mph across the lowlands with gusts up to 80 mph over higher elevations and along eastern slopes and foothills.

Further building and property damage along with possible power outages may occur.

Persons should avoid traveling or going out of doors until this evening when the winds will diminish.
